Ten Minute Christmas Card with Prima Modelling Paste.

Each year I try and make a quick Christmas card in the hopes of re-producing it into mass and sending it out to family and friends – well each year the task just seems bigger and bigger and in the end I am happy with nothing and just leave it all together!
But this year I think I may have a winning formula with some of my favourite products! I think we have a winner people (shouting voice)!
And the bonus this really is a ten minute card if you work in batches creating all the bits and pieces. Here’s how I am tackling this card design to make a quick production line…

  • Step 1

Use your modelling paste and palette knife and create a textured background. Simple lift some paste with your palette and sweep it across the background cardstock until you are happy with the look. TIP: you want to leave some uncovered areas for the next step – so don’t cover the entire piece of cardstock with paste.
  • Step 2

Once the paste is dry, mist your cardstock with 2 different colours of Color Bloom – I used Tea Stain and Storm Cloud in that order. Leave the mist to dry or dry with your heat gun.
  • Step 3

Cut your background piece so that it fits onto the front of your folded card base and adhere it using double sided tape. Add sewing around the edge if so desired.
  • Step 4

Cut Christmas trees using your Silhouette machine in smooth black cardstock to the size that will fit on the front of your folded card. Adhere the tree and add diamanté as decorations.

Festive Season door plaque with an old book cover.

I love creating festive elements to display around the house – don’t get me wrong – i don’t go overboard, but i love subtle hints. So with the holidays looming I have started my festive season creative spree. I hope you are on track with your too…
I created a little door plaque using a recycled book cover. I simply tore off the cover off of an old book, primed the surface with Gesso and added loads of different inks for color.

For my centre focal point I used a combination of die-cut and punched layers. I wanted to use something not too traditional so I opted for this gorgeous butterfly punch from Chiswick. The butterfly was glittered and then layered on top of a die-cut doily and snowflake.
The layers are separated with some soft grey fibers and the rest of the plaque decorated using stamped images, pearls and diamante for that sparkly festive look.
Step 1 - Punch the butterfly into a scrap piece of white cardstock. Remember the butterfly only will punch out of your paper.
Step 2
Use a circle punch and then punch around the butterfly shape. Use 2 different colours of ink to colour the circle and leave it to dry thoroughly.
Step 3
On the back of the circle element, add a small piece of double sided tape. Make sure that the tape is wide enough to cover the butterfly cut out. DO NOT remove the back protective part of the tape.
Step 4
Turn over the circle element to reveal the butterfly – the butterfly will now be sticky on the inside.
Sprinkle gold glitter on top of the sticky side and press down to make sure it sticks really well. Shake off the excess glitter and return it to the container.
Use the silver Pearlescent ink pad and stamp a Christmas sentiment onto some scrap papers. Punch the sentiment out using a circle punch and adhere it randomly across the plaque. Add finishing touches as desired.
Now you can use any of your craft supplies to turn ordinary things into festive touches for your home – and don’t forget those little gifts for the neighbors – something fun that can be enjoyed the entire season!

Mixed Media Project Life Cards – All Dressed Up for Christmas.

Every year we make loads of promises to ourselves to get more organized around the holidays and festive season. And each year we forget to take photos of the little moments, the big moments and life kind of just gallops away.
So this year I am getting all organized – yes I am on a mission! Since Christmas in South Africa is normally a fun festive and HOT occasion, I wanted to use summery colours, and the first thing that came to mind was the new Project Life kit “Hi Sunshine”. So I simply dressed them up to have a festive look and threw in some mixed media products to alter them with a little more personality and oomph. So now all I need to do is take those photos and get my pages done before Jan 1st!

 Card 1
For this card I used a Prima stencil and added the Opaque modelling paste through the stencil in the left hand corner of my card. The reindeer head is a jpg. image I cut on the Silhouette in smooth black American Crafts cardstock and then misted with Gold Leaf Color Bloom mist. Once the modelling paste was dry I inked over the top with a finger dauber and some brown ink to highlight the texture.

Card 2
For this car I added 3 little triangles using the modelling paste through a Heidi Swapp stencil. The bottom half of the card has a Christmas phrase and some red polka dot paper cut from another PL card.

Card 3
I covered most of the background of this card with the same triangle stencil and modelling paste from Heidi Swapp, and then added the word Christmas on top using a stapler. Quick and easy!

Card 4
I love this look. On this card I used the modelling paste and spread it over most of the PL card using my palette knife. I then used the lid from my color bloom mists to stamp into the paste and left it to dry. A simple star element and sequins finishes off this card

step 1
Scoop out a small amount of modelling paste using your palette knife.
 Step 2
Spread the paste out over your PL card in a thin smooth layer
 Step 3
Use a lid to stamp into your paste. You can also do this with rubber stamps for a fun and funky textured look.
Step 4
Leave the paste to dry naturally and then dress up your card using embellishments and inks.

Opaque Modelling paste....

Opague: adjective adjective: opaque; comparative adjective: opaquer; superlative adjective: opaquest 1. 1. not able to be seen through; not transparent.”bottles filled with a pale opaque liquid”.Non transparent, cloudy, filmy, blurred, hasy, smeared, misty

Opaque modelling paste allows you to add the paste over certain areas making them cloudy with texture but not totally covering what is underneath it. The beauty of this product is that I can use it over my Project Life cards without covering the beautiful colours and designs totally, but adding a workable surface for texture and stamping. Opaque products can also be coloured using paint, pigments and dye inks so you can customize it at any time.
I love how these mixed media products from Prima enables me to alter and change the look of my PL cards without totally taking away what drew my attention to them in the first place.

Mixed Media Block Using Mixed Media Art Mediums.

When Prima launched the new Finnabair mixed media art mediums I think the entire mixed media and scrapbooking community were relieved to be honest! Here was something new and exciting and accessible to everyone – those who want to dabble in more adventurous waters or those who want to just play around with a bit more texture.
For me it is a bit of both – I want to be able to create mixed media pieces to experiment and play, but also to use it on my layouts, cards and Project Life cards. So today I created a mixed media block, working directly onto a piece of wood using my favourite art mediums from Prima and some additional embellishments.

How I created the mixed media base of my block

STEP 1: I started off my applying a layer of Texture Paste White Sand, combined with some Modelling Paste Opaque white and some Gold Crackle texture Paste. I applied all 3 mediums using the same palette knife covering sections at a time and then overlapping them all to ensure full coverage of my wooden block.

STEP 3: I used the Tea Stain Color Bloom mist to add colour to my chipboard clock and left it to dry.
STEP 4: For my wooden black, I wanted to add colour so I used two colours of Color Bloom combined on top of the Modelling paste and crackle paste and sand texture paste – just liberally mist the block and leave it to dry completely.
  • TIP: Once the mists are dry, the surface feels a bit tacky, so I added a light spray of fixative to set everything and seal it in.

To finish off my block I added some Prima flowers and embellishments. To adhere everything to my block I used my Tombow Mono Multi – and it worked perfectly.

A fun project completed in a few hours – with loads of texture and interest. I really loved working with these high quality products – perfect in every way.

Have you used Prima’s mixed media art mediums yet? Please let me know what you created.

Trim the tree Christmas Card - by Jowilna Nolte.

Hi there and welcome to another blog post with me Jowilna for Couture Creations!
We're heading towards the silly season fast and i thought i would share a quick and easy Christmas card for the festive season - just so you can get ahead and start getting creative.
To introduce some cooler colours into my cards i used a blue patterned paper from the Sew Jo | CO723545 paper pad to cut the scalloped border die from the Chandeliers Set | CO723247.
On top of the border i layered some cardstock and clear words for added interest - the trim the tree element was raised using the Couture Creations foam tape.

I used the Trio of trees die to create a focal point for my card. Cut out of white smooth technique cardstock and then coloured using red dye ink. Once the ink was dry i added some gold glitter glue using my finger tips for a subtle shine.
The tree die cut was layered on top of a patterned paper from the paper pad, adding some colour behind it and grounding it on the white card background.
a quick and easy card using only a few elements effectively! i hope you are getting all geared up for the festive season and making your own cards this year! So easy when you use your Couture Creations products to create with.
